39* Free fallin’

Today’s song is part of the first solo album called “Full moon fever” released in 1989 of

Tom Petty

He had released 7 albums before it with his band
“Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers”
and after it they released 5 more albums…

This rocker from Florida is nowadays 63 years-old
but since his youth he was fan of Elvis’ and The Beatles

Fun fact: This song was performed at the MTV Music Awards of 1989 featuring Axl Rose and at the Super Bowl XLII Halftime show. Can you imagine it?

The official music video of this song shows us an exagerated picture of “good girls” with long skirts and fancy hairstyles celebrating a sweet sixteen party at the beginning and after that it shows the “bad girls” style with mini skirts and tons of make-up which could represent a common transformation from girl to woman but influenced by a heart-break experience.

The best of the video was watching the old-style, those days fashion and trends, too many scenes on the mall, the sport cars and the skateboards…

This song lyrics talk about a childhood love that Tom had before he move out from Florida in search of fame and fortune. A good girl who fell in love with a bad boy… he wrote this song in a nostalgic way remembering this girl he loved once and who he could love again with no strings attached. The kind of feeling in which you can’t stop falling in love and regretting what you didn’t do to cherish that love when you had the chance.

…And the free lyrics (english/spanish) :

She’s a good girl, loves her mama, loves Jesus and America too
She’s a good girl, she’s crazy about Elvis
Loves horses and her boyfriend too

It’s a long day living in Reseda
There’s a freeway running through the yard
And I’m a bad boy, because I don’t even miss her
I’m a bad boy for breaking her heart

And I’m free, I’m free falling…

All the vampires walking through the valley
Move west down Ventura Boulevard
And all the bad boys are standing in the shadows
And the good girls at home with broken hearts

(…)

I wanna glide down over Mulholland
I wanna write her name in the sky
I want to free fall out into nothing
Gonna leave this world for awhile
